1950: Wildernesse Country Club UFO
Posted On: October 1, 2021

The year is 1950, the place, Wildernesse Country Club, Sevenoaks, United Kingdom. Witnesses advised that they observed an unknown bright object in the sky travelling in an easterly direction. There was no obvious means of propulsion and the object travelled in complete silence.

On December 10th, 1950, at about 19:30 hours, Group Captain Cartmel of the Deputy Directorate of Equipment made the following report:

“Unidentified Aircraft. Although there may be some good explanation for it. I wish to report an unusual occurrence which I witnessed at 19:30 hours last night, Sunday, 10th December. I tabulate details below:

  1. Place - Wildernesse Country Club. 1½ miles N.E. of Sevenoaks, Kent.
  2. Object Seen - Bright light is sky moving in West-East direction which did not alter in size or intensity of light during movement. No flame or navigation lights were visible.
  3. Weather – Raining sky 10/10ths overcast. Cloud base estimate 3 – 4000 ft. Wind negligible.
  4. Height and speed - Although weather conditions made assessment difficult. I estimate the object maintained a steady height of about 3000 ft at approximately 130 – 150 mph. It was visible for about five minutes until it passed out of sight behind the Club buildings.
  5. The matter which really drew my attention to it was the complete absence of sound. Two friends who were with me witnessed the entire occurrence.
  6. Although I am an Equipment Officer. I have done nearly 1400 hours flying in 81 types of aircraft and I held a pilots A license before, therefore, I feel you might regard the assessments I have made as reasonably accurate. I would be interested to know if this information is of any value and whether or not there is an explanation to the phenomena of straight and level flight without sound.”

The report was basically dismissed out of hand stating the moon or conventional aircraft.

The witness was a military officer and professional observer. It seems odd that he could not tell the difference between the moon and an aircraft. I also would think that the reported weather conditions would make the moon explanation impossible. This is a common theme where real reports are officially dismissed out of hand with something ridiculous like the moon or a weather balloon. The most interesting part of this report is the silent running. What aircraft that could travel at that speed in 1950 and could be silent running?
