1956: Lincolnshire Glass Sphere UFO
The year is 1956, the place, near the RAF station at Lincolnshire, England. A large, spherical glass like 80 foot in diameter object was seen over the coast for over an hour and also seen on radar from RAF Manby. RAF planes approached the object and it disappeared.
On September 22nd, 1956 at 15:00 hours, the witness, Rodney Maynard, from Belvedere and about thirty other people observed an object in the middle of the street. At this time scores of people in Lincolnshire witnessed something truly extraordinary in the sky. A silent, glowing orb sat motionlessly above the North Sea and was clearly observed by a large crowd of onlookers who had gathered on the promenade at Cleethorpes to view the spectacle. The object also caught the attention of a nearby RAF Station at Manby. It was detected on radar, then observed through powerful telescopes. It was said to be approximately 80 feet wide, composed of a glass like substance and hovering at a height of 54,000 feet.
Perhaps fearing that the object was some secret Soviet WMD, the RAF scrambled two fighter planes to intercept the strange flying craft. However, as the planes approached the UFO it literally vanished from sight, leaving the pilots and hundreds of other people on the ground well and truly dumbfounded. The event remains one of the UK's many unsolved UFO cases.
I could not find too much more about this incident other that what is written above. Strange but not very conclusive. If the object was captured on radar then it removes the possibility that it was a trick of light or something similar.
