1957: US Pilot Ordered to Shoot Down UFO

The year is 1956, the place, North Sea, England. An American fighter pilot flying from an English air base at the height of the cold war was ordered to open fire on a massive unidentified object that had lit up his radar screen.

On May 20th, 1957, night time, the witness, Milton Torres, flying a USAF F-86D Sabre, an American fighter pilot was sent to intercept an unusual object, which had been picked up on radar at a Royal Air Force station on the southeastern tip of England.

Milton Torres advised, “This was a flying object with very unusual flight patterns”. Milton also advised he had been ordered to fire a full salvo of rockets at the U.F.O., which was moving erratically over the North Sea, but that at the last moment the object picked up great speed and disappeared from his radar.

Milton Torres said he never saw the U.F.O. directly but watched in awe as it appeared on his jet's radar screen and then sped off before he could fire. He advised that the object spent periods motionless in the sky before reaching estimated speeds of more than 7,600 mph.

Milton Torres also advised, “I shall never forget it. On that night I was ordered to open fire even before I had taken off. That had never happened before.”

Milton Torres further stated, "I had not the foggiest idea what had actually occurred, nor would anyone explain anything to me". After returning to the base, he said, he was led to a man in civilian clothes, who “advised me that this would be considered highly classified and that I should not discuss it with anybody.”

Milton Torres, told Britain's Sky News from Miami that he had spent 50 frustrating years trying to uncover the truth of his midair encounter.

My Take: Not much to go on here. What large object could easily out pace a F-86D Sabre in 1957? Stay motionless and reach speeds more than 7,600 mph?

Resources: Summary from the Associated Press, October 20, 2008.
