1996: Pilot Has Close Encounter with Enormous UFO Over Saragonha Island

The year was 1996. The place, Saragonha Island, Brazil. The witness was operating a small Tupi airplane when witnessed a giant cone shaped UFO, 50 to 60 meters tall, with a base as big as a soccer stadium. Haroldo Westendorff is a Brazilian manager of an improvement of Rice Company, a transporter company and a ration factory. On his free time, he would pilot his own Tupi airplane. In one of those flights, he would have experienced something incredible.


On October 5th, 1996, at 9:00 am, after having breakfast, he took off Pelotas' airport. At 10:15 am, when flying over the Saragonha Island, at Patos Lagoon, 15 km away from the airport, a huge flying object surprised him. When recovered from the scare, he managed to fly the airplane close to the object, and flown around it for ten minutes, keeping a 100 meters distance.


Westendorff was a pilot since the seventies, he claimed the object was cone-shaped, 50 to 60 meters tall, and its base was as big as a soccer stadium, with about 100 meters diameter. While flying around it, he observed the object was made of metal or something similar. The base was smooth, and had 8 vertexes, each one with three objects similar to bubbles. The object was spinning around itself and was flying towards the sea. Westendorff didn't notice any hostile reaction of the UFO.


Westendorff is certain that what he saw was not a meteor. He describes it as an object the size of a soccer stadium (approximately 350 feet in diameter and 200 feet in height) with a circular base, whose body was made of a material that looked like aluminum. He claims to have circled the ship three times, that the spaceship kept circling around in its own orbit and that in order to keep up with its speed he flew at 60 miles per hour.


Westendorff contacted the Infraero room at Pelotas' airport by the radio, and reported the sighting. He asked Airton Mendes da Silva what he could see on the East direction, towards the 15/33 runway.


Da Silva said he saw and triangular grey object, with rounded edges. He was accompanied by the assistants Gilberto Martins dos Santos and Jorge Renato S. Dutra, who tried together to identify the object.


Westendorff also contacted Cindacta II, in Curitiba, Paraná, which was responsible for watching the skies of southern Brazil. They answered there was nothing strange at the radars, even though Westendorff's plane was detected.


Suddenly, the edge of the UFO opened and a smaller UFO exited out of the big one. It inclined 45 degrees and flew away into the sky in an unbelievable speed. Frightened, Westendorff kept away from the object.


After a short time, the big UFO also climbed straight up, incredibly fast, without making any noise, wind, explosion or any other expected physical reaction.


The Ministério da Aeronáutica (Aeronautic Ministry) keeps a secret investigation of the object seen by Westendorff. A sergeant of Canoas air base was sent to Pelotas to get the deposition of Westendorff and the employees of Infraero. He was also informed of relates about the object and saw a drawing of the object.


His description of the object is very similar to that of another object photographed on September 16, 1996 in Valley, Alabama, where after the sighting, three black helicopters were seen in the surrounding area. None of the helicopters had any identifying tags, which is typical of military planes, so that it could be denied that secret tests and maneuvers were being conducted by the U.S. military.


In the Cosmic Secret, author William F. Hamilton III, director of the organization MUFON, an organization which is responsible for researching UFO activity in the United States, reports that a similar spaceship was seen in Belgium in 1989 and again in 1990. These sightings were by pilots, aeronautical engineers and air traffic controllers.
