I received a Ghost Text message while staying in an old hotel

In 2012, my wife and I spent a night at Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood.

Despite living in Oregon all my life, and visiting Mt Hood often, it was the first (and currently only) time I'd spent a night in the lodge.

Built in the 1930s as an WPA project, you might know it from exterior shots of the Overlook Hotel in Kubrick's The Shining.

(The interior shots are a totally different hotel, Timberline is smaller and more rustic. Cozier!).

My mom's cousin Michael died in his room at Timberline in 2005.

Some heart problem, possibly aggravated by the altitude.

He and my mom were super close as kids, but hardly ever saw each other as adults.

I think I probably met him, but I don't remember.

He taught at a college in Mississippi.

A super nice guy by all accounts.

He always went by “Michael”, never Mike.

After a very nice dinner, we drank Moscow Mules in the bar, and went to sleep relatively early.

The next morning, I woke up to see I missed a text message shortly before 2am from a number I didn't recognize.

Hey michael here gnite.

I texted back, but never got a reply.

I called the number, a NY area code (347), but couldn't leave a message on account of a “full mailbox”.

We left after breakfast, and the story pretty much ends there.

I think our stay at Timberline lasted about 16 hours.

So what happened?.

One explanation is that I was contacted via text message by the ghost of my mom's cousin.

Or, I simply received a errant text, which by random chance used the name of a deceased relative during the very brief window of time when I was in the very place where that relative died.
