In a period of more than a month, the radars of the Punta Indio Naval Air Base detected sporadic unidentified contacts blips. These echoes sometimes appeared alone, other times in formation, and other times approaching or chasing aircraft in flight.

On June 31, 1965, Lieutenant Federico Machain took off in pursuit of one of these echoes and was able to maintain visual contact. He described the object as ellipsoidal in shape, 12 meters in length and that it moved away at very high speed towards the Rio de la Plata.

Letter sent by Lieutenant Federico Machain to Dr. Roberto Banchs in May 1981:.

Buenos Aires, May 11, 1981.

I have received your kind letter dated April 3 and I will gladly try to satisfy your requirements.

In relation to the case I had the enormous good fortune of being involved in at the Punta Indio Naval Air Base in 1965, I would like to point out the following:.

During a period that I find it difficult to specify, perhaps four or six weeks, we made observations of "unidentified contacts" on the radar screen of the Ground Control Approach equipment of the Base. At that time I was complementing my responsibilities as Flight Instructor, Professor at the Naval Aviation School and Head of the Logistics Department with those of operating officer and GCA instructor.

The observations I refer to occurred sporadically and consisted of, basically, two or four blips, which stood out clearly on the screen and showed a definite and coordinated displacement.

At first we did not pay attention, (I am referring to two other GCA officers and myself), to such echoes, until on one occasion, on a day of thick fog, my Beechcraft C-45 aircraft had to take off from the Base to Aeroparque. On that occasion we observed two echoes that were located behind the plane, from the beginning of its takeoff run until it was flying approximately over the Magdalena area. We informed the pilot about the echoes, and asked him to try to verify their position visually, which was not possible due to the existing fog.

This experience caused me deep concern, since I did not imagine then, not even remotely, that it could be something abnormal, but I attributed it to different factors that proceeded to verify, such as:.

Antenna failures.

Equipment failures.

Aircraft electronic shadow.

Atmospheric problems.

Other aircraft.

No equipment or antenna failures were found. No special atmospheric or meteorological situations could be detected.

A few days after the above-mentioned experience, a similar event was repeated, but during which the "strange echoes" followed and evolved behind a single-engine aircraft, whose pilot could not observe them. This episode lasted about half an hour.

Deeply intrigued, I began to recall the comments made by U-S Naval Aviators about UFOs during the period I studied and graduated as a Naval Aviator in the United States.

I slowly began to admit that our radar experiences could be of that nature.

I began to go to the Base at night to observe through the radar screen and one night, with witnesses around me, we observed a formation of six echoes flying in a V formation at an estimated altitude of 15,000 feet and a speed approaching 5000 km/h.

Finally, having accumulated several observations and having exhausted all the verifications available to us, I decided to report my presumptions in writing to my superiors.

This report, concrete and objective, was accepted with absolute seriousness and opinions were requested from officials knowledgeable about this type of phenomena. Then came the opportunity of the experience that you know, and that totally and absolutely confirmed what I had assumed.

The object sighted visually by me and simultaneously verified by the radar operators, was ellipsoidal in shape, of such a brightness that prevented to see its surface, and about 12 meters in diameter.

When I sighted it, it was about 200 meters from my plane and I could see it clearly and without any doubt for at least thirty to forty seconds. I did not perceive any anomalies or disturbances, neither in the plane nor in my person.

When my return was ordered, I returned to the landing, while the object flew away at very high speed towards the Rio de la Plata, passing over Las Pipinas.

Subsequently I dedicated myself to read and learn as much as possible about the UFO phenomenon, which eventually led me to relate with other people dedicated to the same.

I have also elaborated my theories, which I have discussed and sketched with friends and scholars.

Since you ask for my opinion, I will gladly summarize my thoughts:.

I have not the slightest doubt about the existence of interstellar spacecraft that periodically visit our planet.

I assume they come from outside our solar system.

I believe that they study us as we study the indigenous people of Australia, or perhaps the bees, without direct contact with them.

I consider that the lack of contact, (at least frequent and open), is due to the fact that there must exist an enormous technological, philosophical, theological and, very possibly, physical abyss with us. This fact is surely aggravated by possible aggressive reactions on our part.

Their presence probably dates back a long time, which may have a different meaning for them in relation to their average life.

I believe that their translation in space takes place in motherships (cigars?) from which exploration craft (disks?) are detached.

Its energy is probably of magnetic origin, taking advantage of the North-South polarity, (positive-negative), that exists in space, as in solar systems and celestial bodies.

If so, it would mean that they control this inexhaustible source of energy which allows them to travel for a long time at high speed and to perform abrupt maneuvers, (for our physical concepts).

It is very feasible that they use zones on Earth for their concentration and, perhaps, replenishment of minerals or water.

I think it is more likely that they would make contact with terrestrial spacecraft in interplanetary flight than with ours here on the planet.

I do not wish to extend more than necessary, so I remain at your disposal for possible clarifications of what is contained in this letter or exchange of ideas.

Yours sincerely.

Federico N. Machain.
