Processing a Paranormal Event From Nearly a Decade Ago
Posted On: November 8, 2023

So, this happened to me about a decade ago (2014).

For some reason it's been on my mind a bit lately, so I wanted to write it out.

I figured I would post it here because people might find it interesting.

There is some context needed for it to make sense, so I am providing that. I apologize for the length, but some details are needed for it to make sense.

When I was eighteen, my mother moved in with her boyfriend.

Because there were a lot of kids between them, and I was going off to college, I didn't get a proper bedroom in the townhome they bought.

They set up a bed for me in a room that was technically a basement office.

It had glass doors.

The way my bed was angled, it had a view of the staircase that led into the basement.

Upon moving into place, I was immediately taken aback by how nice it was.

At the time, my mom was working nights as a janitor, so it seemed really out of our budget, like there was a rainfall shower and granite countertops.

It also had huge windows that looked out into dense woods.

And, the home was completely furnished. (In the U-S this is really uncommon).

The person who lived there before us even left their personal belongings like clothes and books and a photo of what looked like a bachelor party on the wall.

That seemed weird to me, but my mom's boyfriend said the guy who previously owned it had to move to England really quickly and left his stuff.

Well, despite the fact that I had some questions, I just kept quiet because I was happy my family got to be somewhere nice.

And, my mom's boyfriend said I could take some of the kitchen equipment that was leftover from the old owner to college with me which seemed like a cool bonus.

I tend to go to bed later naturally, but as I would fall asleep most nights I would hear footsteps upstairs.

Automatically, I assumed it was my mom's boyfriend and wrote it off.

I went off to college at the end of the summer with little incident and came back home again at Christmas break.

One night after I got back, it was like midnight, I heard someone walking down the stairs.

I sat up because I assumed it was Mom's boyfriend coming to talk to me.

My mom was at work.

My brother was asleep in another room in the basement.

We were the only people there.

I sat there for a few seconds trying to see who was there because the lights weren't on and it was like pitch black.

Then the lights (which were on a dimmer switch) started fading up and down over and over again.

No one was on the stairs.

The next part I'm not proud of, but I was scared shitless and hit underneath my covers.

This part might of been my imagination, but it felt like the heat went out in my office/bedroom for a few minutes.

This is the most terrified I have ever been in my life and I was sobbing.

Eventually, I calm myself down, but I stayed under the covers for the rest of the night. I did not look.

I refused to.

Then, I fell asleep.

The next morning, my mom gets back from work, and I tell her and her boyfriend what happened.

They both give each other this weird look and then my mom says to me.

"Honey, I didn't want to tell you because we thought you would be scared.." and then proceeds to tell me how the previous owner of the home unalived themselves in the townhome.

Apparently, in their bedroom, in A BED WHICH MY MOTHER KEPT AND SLEPT IN. (She says it was fine because it was such a nice bed and she replaced the mattress).

Imagine how I felt being told that, living somewhere where that happened and having it intentionally hidden from you.

It doesn't feel great.

Well, recently, because I've been thinking about what happened, and I decided to look up the townhome on Zillow.

My mom and her boyfriend bought it for 80k below value in 2014 which is a lot for where we live.

(I'm not going to link it because I was registered to vote at that address and that info is public in Michigan.)

It explains how they were able to buy it.

Weirdly, about a year later, my mom's boyfriend died in the townhome as well from cancer that he let go undiagnosed until it was in stage 4.

Because there was a dispute with his adult children about the property, we ended up having to move out after he died.

(It turned out that although my mom gave her boyfriend her savings towards it, he didn't put her name on the deed).

Maybe it was just a power outage in the house which made the heat/lights act weird.

That is possible.

But I am so sure, I heard someone on the stairs.

And regardless, even if it was my imagination playing tricks on me, can you imagine finding out the morning after that event someone unalived themselves in the bed your mother is sleeping in????.
